I ran across a blog post the other day entitled “What Did Jesus Look Like?”
I have to admit, normally when I run across articles like that I immediately do the eye-roll thing and move on. In my experience most people who tackle the subject of What did Jesus Look Like come from 1 of 2 camps:
1. Racist white people who want to justify the blond-haired blue eyed image of Jesus that we’ve been beaten over the head with
2. Militant black people out to prove that Jesus wasn’t white.
I’m not sure what made me stop and actually read this article, but I was pleasantly surprised at the author’s take on Jesus’ appearance
There are dozens of accounts where Jesus simply slipped away and blended into the crowds….Isaiah described Jesus as looking like an ordinary man and that there nothing special in His appearance that would make Him stand out. Isaiah described Him in 53: 2b “he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.” He wouldn’t fit in well with the prosperity preachers on TV. He wouldn’t make a popular Internet preacher today. He wouldn’t be getting millions of hits on YouTube.
He concludes that: “The Bible is silent on exactly what He looked like and if the Bible is silent on His exact appearance, then God apparently doesn’t think it’s important for us to know.”
From the outside looking in, there wasn’t anything special about Jesus. He apparently looked like every other Jewish man in his community. But there was something inside of him that made him very special. And, more importantly, his actions were a manifestation of that special something.
The same is true for you and I. Maybe on the outside we’re nothing special to look at, but on the inside there is something very special that is itching to get out. Let your light shine.
